RAMAPO, N.Y. -- Ramapo police are investigating a series of incidents in which thieves are moving from house to house rummaging through unlocked car doors in driveways and stealing items, Airmont Mayor Phil Gigante said.

The incidents have reportedly occurred on Smith Hill Road, Marjorie Drive, Provost Drive and Brookside Avenue, Gigante said.

“Right now the incidents are limited to just rummaging through the cars, but remember, some cars have the garage door opener built into the car," Gigante said. "If someone gets into the car, there is a chance they could enter your house. Please be safe.”

Detective Sgt. Brian Corbett of the Ramapo Police Department said the investigation is ongoing.

Corbett reminds  local residents  to remove  valuables from their vehicles and to  lock all doors  when parked.
